  1. Hi Steve,

I have found the collections video set very interesting. I have been using collections for a while now, but not to its fullest potential. I mainly shoot wildlife and have all photos keyworded into species > subspecies, whenever I needed a certain species I searched through the keywords. I have never thought about using collections in the way as you demonstrated in the videos.

What do you think is the main advantage of using collections over keywords for sorting?
How do you use the smart collections in you’re own workflow? I have never found a good use to smart collections in my wildlife photography.

    1. I personally like collections for sniping around and browsing for images. Most of the time, when I’m looking for an image, I’m not looking for a specific species, but something to use as a sample for a video or article. So, it’s faster – for me – to quick pop from collection to collection. However, I’d recommend not getting too specific with them either – that’s really with keywords.

As for smart collections, I personally don’t use them much either. They can be handy for some of my technical articles, but most of the time the library filter gets the job done 🙂

The nice thing with Lightroom is that it gives you a lot of different ways to work.

  2. Re Collection Videos 18 – I found a little glitch, or difference, with my LR Classic. The filter label search in Lightroom Smart Collection AND Folder Collections is not there, it is replaced by “Labeled Collections” there is no search by color label option! Only drop down options are ‘All’, ‘Synched Collections’ or ‘Labeled Collections’! Just frustrating that I can’t replicate everything to the letter that you have shown. Other than that Steve, I followed everything perfectly, great vids and great instructions! Much appreciated!

  3. Hi Steve, it’s Ray again. Just a quick note to say I’ve figured out that my LR is 8.4.1 and the color label filter came in on 9.0, so that’s why I don’t see it! Unfortunately until I upgrade the Mac OS I can’t run LR 9.0, but at least I know now. No doubt loads of other issues will arise with new customers as LR gets updated. But anyway, just thought I’d share with you. Keep up the great work, it is really appreciated and no small task! Cheers from London UK, currently not in lockdown, but your vids will keep me occupied when we are!

    1. Hi Ray –

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you – I see you figured it out 🙂 The color label filter is a newer option.

  4. Hi Steve,

Thank you for your exceptionally clear teaching on the complex subject of Collections.

I want to add a topic that you didn’t mention, you can rearrange the order of images in a normal Collection, like in a photo album, this is not possible in Smart Collections.

  5. Steve,
Your tutorial just keeps getting better and better. I was ready to give up on Lightroom and go strictly with Luminar. You are showing me a whole new world and I can’t thank you enough. Keep up the great work.

Ron (It shows me as James, but I use my middle name)

  6. I like collection because I can use it to sync up pictures with Adobe Lightroom App on my iPhone/iPad. This helps me to show my pictures to friends when I am away from my iMac.

  7. Steve,

I was going to leave you a compliment and a question, but my question is the same as the first above, collections v. keywords, so I’ll just leave the compliment.

Your instruction on Collection, Smart Collections and Collection Sets is superb. Really. I don’t know how many explanations of this I’ve seen and read, and none have really hit the utility (to me). You’re crystal clear, with great examples. Thanks so very much for creating teaching that is this clear and simple (intelligence is the art of making the complex simple, not the other way around). I’ve become a fan.
