  1. I’m having trouble downloading this video to my computer. I get the following error:
This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it.
    How can I fix this?

    1. There was an error with the video, it’s fixed now – sorry about that.

  2. A storage solution that works very well for both Win as Mac are the NAS and DAS from Drobo.
High quality stuff and available in all kinds of connections.
DAS = direct attached storage = not via a network like a NAS but via Thunderbolt, USB2 or 3, …

  3. Is it possible to download the entire course rather than accessing and downloading each video separately ?

    1. Hi Jeff –

Not yet šŸ™‚ If we have enough requests, we’ll see if we can put a bunch of links on a single page. However, I won’t put it all together at once – we tried that with the Noise Reduction workshop and way too many people had download issues. One large file at a time is best šŸ™‚

  4. What download speed do I need to watch the videos without spending an inordinate amount of time watching the squirrel run around the ball superimposed on Steve’s chin or (alternately) what am I doing wrong?

    1. Hi Harvey – It sounds like a buffering issue. My guess is that there was a lot of network traffic when you were watching (not for that particular video, but in general). We host the videos with Vimeo and they are a fairly robust platform. If it continues, I’d recommend downloading the video to your computer – that should help. Also, you might try selecting a lower quality from the settings menu (gear cog) on the video.

  5. Steve,
I am just starting to use Lightroom although it has been on my computer for some time. I recently got a message from adobe that I needed to allow them to make a new catalogue that was not backward compatible. I also noticed that there are a few catalogues listed. Is there a way to combine these catalogues? Will the backward compatibility issue affect any possibility for combining?

Thanks so much! I am enjoying the course!

  6. great information Steve, but i am having trouble with video stop and not wanting to restart. i have windows.

    1. Hi Dale – It sounds like a buffering issue. Usually, this is due to a heavy traffic on your ISP’s network. Most of the time if you try later, it will clear up. We host the videos with Vimeo, so normally it’s not on their end. Worst case, I recommend just downloading the video(s) to your computer and watching that way – no buffering then šŸ™‚ At any rate, normally this clears up pretty soon.

  7. Hi Steve ,
I,m a Mac user (Catalina) and I have a large Synology NAS setup which I store all my photos in folders, organised by year. But it seems I cannot create a LR (Classic 9.2) catalog on it . I keep getting the same error massage telling me that LR does not allow a catalog to be created on a network drive. Do you have a workaround? I couldn’t find anything answers on LR community, so just wondering if you can help? Thanks.
    Swee

    1. None that I know of – Lightroom really doesn’t like NAS for it’s catalog. In that case, just keep it on the computer’s hard drive. Not a big deal – just remember to include it in your backups šŸ™‚

      1. Hi Steve,
I’ve found out that there is a way to store the catalog on the network drive if you are using Mac. The answer is to first create a target drive on any folder on the network drive as a Mac “Sparse Disk Image Bundle” using the Disk Utility. Create you catalogue folder here using LR. From then on, LR will recognise it like any local drive and will fire up this catalog on the network drive. However, this is a bit funky method as the Sparse Disk Image does need to stay synchronised frequently and if you this fails, then you could lose your catalog unless you have a back up elsewhere.

  8. Steve….
Thanks again for putting this together, for your windows users out there I have attached a link to an article from PC magazine. “The Best NAS (network Attached Storage) Devices for 2020”. I have personal experience with both QNAP which also makes very large NAS devices for the corporate world and I am currently running Synology Disk Stations which is a couple of years old. (The New ones are 4x faster than even the ones that were out there just 2 years ago. This article outlines Pros and Cons for all the devices that they reviewed as well at who they would be most tailored towards.

    1. Thanks so much! I’m sure this will help a lot of people! Great post!

  9. Very nice. I’ve been using the OWC Thunderbay 4 and it’s been rock solid for me. Now that I added the D850 to my kit I might be needing to step up to the 12TB drives in the future.

  10. Dear Steve, Iā€™m just starting this course, and I have an immediate doubt.
I have a 27ā€³ 2017 iMac with 2TB Fussion Drive Hard drive on it, I also have a 5 TB LaCie External Hard Drive.
What should I do to manage my files?
I currently stock all my files at my external HD, and work from there on Lightroom, but it gets kind of slow sometimes, so I was thinking of improving my Fusion Drive for a 2TB or 4TB internal SSD, and work from there on Lightroom. Or should I get an external higher capacity storage to make my workflow come from there?
That is excluding my plans of getting a backup system, which I believe should be RAID/NAS
I want to get this right before jumping into the whole organization parts. Thanks!

    1. With your setup, I’d be tempted to keep the Lightroom catalog on my iMac’s internal hard drive and the images on the external drive. However, you may see a speed improvement with an external RIAD drive instead. (and the catalog could go either place – usually RAID drives (raid 5) are faster than normal external HDs – at least for read speeds). Of course, an internal SSD would speed things up as well – you could keep your catalog file there and the images on an external RAID drive. Should be pretty quick.

      1. Thanks Steve! So then my best option seems to be upgrading my fusion drive to a ssd and getting raid 5.
        Thanks for the advice

  11. I am using 3 Lacie 4TB drives, a ‘Quadra’ and 2 ‘Rugged’. One is a Working Drive and the other two are routinely backed up to the Working Drive.

  12. Hi Steve,

this is just insanely incredible course in positive way! I was just so overwhelmed by LR and file management, that I stopped processing my photos almost. I must point out, that pricing for all your products are just amazing and do not justify amount of great work you put into it. We all very appreciate it!

I have question thought as passionate photographer my PC is just full by 1TB for now and I want to immediately order external RAID drive system. Although your recommendation is still quite pricey for my use, I certainly do not need 60 TB solution for now. Do you have any ‘cheaper’ equivalent solution as recommendation?

thanks a greetings from Czech Republic

    1. I wish I did, but I really don’t keep on top of all the latest and greatest computer tech. I’d check out a technology review website of some sort.

  13. Steve, I have basically reorganized Lightroom based on your video and love it! I have read and watched a lot of expert advice on how to use Lightroom. Your course is simple, easy to remember and I am enjoying LR again and not fearing it. One thing I would like input on though is the backup routine you use. I do not have a RAID drive but I have all my photos on an external HD. Actually the LR catalog is there as well at least for now. I have a separate external hard drive that I connect to the computer to backup that external HD with my photos on it. But, how do I do an incremental backup of the Photos on Drive #1 onto the backup drive incrementally so that I am not having to re-copy all of the files and photos each time I backup the photos drive?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Charles –

You’ll need a third-party software option for that. I don’t use any, so unfortunately I don’t have any recommendations. Also, keep in mind that if you’re worried about backing up changes to the images, you don’t need to backup the images with each change. The image develop data is in the catalog, not the photo. As long as the catalog is backed up (and current of course), you’ll have all the adjustments you’ve made to the images.

  14. Steve
I just got a 10tb wd easy store and ready to continue.

  15. Hi Steve.

I have just recieved my new iMac 2020 and am getting ready to start using Lightroom.
Could I ask what external SSD drives you are using?
And am I right in thinking that you use External SSD drives for putting your Lightroom Catalogues and photos onto, and then you back them up to your Raid drive for security?
Do you have multiple External SSD Drives, and if so, do you link them all together or just use them as and when needed.
Awesome series, really learning a lot from it as I have from almost all your videos!

    1. My RAID drive is the primary drive and I use a couple of WD spinning drives as off-site backup. I don’t use SSDs at the moment for long term backup, just when I’m on trips. I use a pair of 2TB Samsung T5 drives. Love ’em.

      1. Thanks for the info Steve.
Love the new video on Spot Metering. You make thing so easy to understand.

  16. Hi Steve, I’m wondering for a while if it’s a stupid idea , to hold the SD cards of each trip as an extra back-up ? At this moment I don’t use the expensive SD’s as one need for the Z9 nowadays. I collect my full SD cards in a ,,coin-collector’s ” book and get new ones for each trip . Do you think they lose data or so .. after a while …
